Join veteran cheese maker Mark Stecker to find out how simple it is to make cheese, what makes for a good cheese, and sample several simple styles of cheese.

Students will have the opportunity to make one of the following outdoor projects to enjoy: hoof pick, lantern/plant hooks, or fire pit poker.

Students will have the opportunity to make at least 2 candy canes in the blacksmith shop
Create-Connect: Wood-fired Oven Pretzels with Homemade Mustard
Guests will make pretzels and bake them. While the pretzels are baking, the mustards can be made.

Spend the weekend immersed in history and take a bit of 19th century life and learning with you when you go!
Create-Connect: 19th Century Mittens with a 21st Century Twist
Hand work a lovely pair of mittens like it is the 1890s. Explore hand sewing and needle work as we piece together a wonderful pair of mittens made from upcycled materials.
Create-Connect: Basics of Hand Sewing
Learn the art of hand sewing! Make this basic 19th century style sewing kit called a “housewife.” The housewife uses a variety of basic stitches including the running stitch, whip stitch, and running backstitch.
Babbitt Bearing Pouring Workshop
Vintage machinery requires care and maintenance to keep them running. Mid-Lakes Rustic Iron Club volunteers lead this workshop at the Krueger Sawmill to pour new bearings in the planer there. Participants will learn the basics of repouring babbitt – a process that can be applied to their own vintage machinery.
Sunbonnet Making with Marna Davis
Join dressmaker and historian Marna Davis for a workshop in historical bonnets. How exactly do you know when a sunbonnet is from? Marna walks participants through the differences that set sunbonnets apart from one another and their place on the timeline. Make and take your own bonnet.
All supplies and equipment are provided. Snacks and a sandwich lunch are provided. Participants should plan to bring their own beverages, be prepared for the weather, and bring whatever sewing supplies they prefer to use instead or in addition of what is being provided.
Advanced registration is required by March 10th. Class sizes are limited. The cost for this class is $100.

Metal Christmas Ornaments
Whether it's to create your own keepsake or make presents for friends and family, this is a great opportunity to learn simple metalworking techniques in copper, tin, and brass. You'll have the opportunity to create 2-3 attractive ornaments.
Fee: $5.00 for MCHS Member. $10 for non-member. Advanced registration is required. Ages 6+. Adult must accompany children under age 16.
Family Barn Quilt Painting
Paint your own barn quilt to hang in your home. Learn about the significance of barn quilts. Children will practice pattern repetition with a short barn quilt design activity. There will be 3 patterns and an array of colors to choose from for your completed project. An instructor will assist participants in drawing their patterns. All supplies are provided for this class. Finished project size is 2’ x 2’.

Beginning Blacksmithing: Boot Scraper
The class is designed to give someone with little or no metal working skills as a hands-on, fun “be a blacksmith for a day” experience. Explore the basics of forge work in a blacksmith shop while making a boot scraper to take home.
Basics of Hand-Sewing
Learn the basics of hand sewing. You will learn basic hand stitching skills such as: sewing straight seams, simple hems, sewing on buttons, and how to make the most of using a thimble.
Fee: $10.00 for MCHS Member. $15 for non-member. Advanced registration required. Age 12 and older.
Cheesemaking
During this hands-on cheesemaking workshop, you will learn about the cheesemaking process and how to make mozzarella. You’ll have the chance to stretch mozzarella and sample various cheeses.
Family Woodworking
Woodworking can be fun for everyone! Use real woodworking tools such as hammers, hand drills, hand saw and others to make your own wooden project with the assistance of our instructors. Together, we will learn to safely use a variety of woodworking tools and make our own wood creations.

Have you ever wondered what games pioneer children played? Laura Ingalls Wilder describes many games and activities in her books, and research shows us a few other games that children played during this era. Join us for our workshop as we make toys that you can take home.

Drop Spindle Spinning
Learn about the history of spinning, the different fibers that can be used, and how to prep wool during this interactive class. Our talented instructors will assist you in learning on a drop spindle to help you create your own yarn. Appropriate for ages 10-adult.
