Educational Outreach Programs


Can't make it to the Museum? We'll bring the Museum to you!

Invite a costumed interpreter along with their trunk full of activities and learning materials into your classroom, community center, or library.

Students can have an all-access pass to the past with a visit from our museum staff. We offer the following curriculum-connected programs which involve a mixture of multimedia presentation, artifacts, and hands-on activities, built around a central theme. These in-classroom experiences with details below are led by a museum educator who guide your students though curriculum-based programs using hands-on objects. These experiences are excellent on their own or used as a pre-visit or post-visit activity to enhance the lessons of your field trip. 

Program Length: 45-60 minutes for most programs
Cost: $100 per program (if you are looking for program for multiple classrooms - ask about our ‘multiple program rate).

  • Programs are subject to availability and group size.

  • Additional travel fees apply to sites outside of Manitowoc County ($.65 per mile).

Choose from a menu of targeted outreach educational program options below. Is there a certain topic or area that you are looking to bring to your classroom - just ask!

One-Room School
Grades PreK - Adult

We bring the museum to you! We turn your classroom into a 19th-century one-room schoolhouse. Our costumed museum educator reminds students of the rules of discipline while guiding them through their lessons. They are asked to engage in cooperative learning, practice their penmanship, use a slate, and read stories from a McGuffey reader.

Cabinet of Curiosities
Grades PreK - Adult

Our museum educator brings unusual and everyday objects from the 19th century to your classroom. Students have the opportunity to examine the objects and discover on their own how people devised technological solutions to meet their specific needs. This program provides ample opportunities to compare the tools and constructs of the past with those of today.

19th-Century Games
Grades PreK - Adult

We bring the museum to you! Guided by a costumed museum educator, students play with rolling hoops, cup-and-ball, the whimmy-diddle, graces, and much more. Those who like a challenge can try to identify the strategies involved in each game and the physics principles that underlie each toy. The program also provides topics for discussion about resource use, the purpose of play, and comparisons between past and present life.

 

Pioneer Boys and Girls
Targeted to Grades K - 3

We bring the museum to you! Students discover what pioneer life was like for the settlers of Wisconsin. Using 19th-century objects and clothing, they explore what a typical day was like for children in the late 1800s. This moveable museum program happens in the classroom and is guided by a costumed museum educator.

Travel through History
Grades K - 3

We bring the museum to you! The story of a 19th-century transportation comes alive as our museum educator brings a cart full of objects for students to see and touch. Based on Based on The Ox-Cart Man by Donald Hall and Locomotive by Brian Floca.

The Quilt Story
Grades 2 - 8

Through “The Quilt Story,” by Tony Johnston and Tomie dePaola, students will delve into the world of 19th-century quilting, exploring its history and artistic techniques. Our museum educator will lead students through creating their own paper quilt squares, enabling them to express their creativity while learning about the past.

 

The Homefront
Grades 5 - Adult

How to pack a box for a Civil War Soldier. While the men are away, families at home do their best to support them. Have the class pack a box for our brave boys. What should go in the box and who will do it?

Civil War
Grades 5 - Adult

What was a soldier’s life? Muster in a student while learning what items soldiers were issued, what they added to their kits and why. One lucky student will be the model soldier.

Victorian Yuletide
Grades PreK - Adult

We bring the museum to you! Understand how the many cultures that migrated to Wisconsin influenced the traditions of Yuletide in the 19th century. Compare 19th century celebrations to the holiday traditions of today as we decorate a Yuletide tree and make an ornament! 

 

COMING SOON! History Detective
(targeted to middle school and high school students)

Your group will be given a mystery to solve. As you move through various stations, you will be given clues and resources (primary sources and secondary sources) to use to help answer your mystery. Take on the role of a history detective (museum archivist) and help solve the history mystery!

This program typically lasts between 90 minutes and 2 hours. Please let our education team know how much time you have allotted.
