The Granary finds its Home

The granary, ca 1990

The granary was moved to our Manitowoc County Historical Society Museum and Pinecrest Village in the spring of 1970. Since then this structure has remained on its blocking and used as storage—patiently waiting for its permanent home.

This structure was the first farm building to be a part of our museum complex. Originally located on a farm in the Francis Creek area, the granary was used for the storage of corn and grain in bins, and for the housing of equipment such as corn shellers, fanning mills, corn or potato planters, and other hand tools.

It has always been a goal of the museum to create a farmstead. While the vision has taken on different turns over the past 50 years, with the addition of the Meeme House a permanent home for the granary can become a reality. In addition to being a former stagecoach, store, and bar room, the historic structure was also home to a farming family. The horses, cattle, and chickens played a large role in the success and livelihood for the Herr family.

The granary was located behind our Machine Shed storage building for many decades. In November, 2025 the granary was moved by DeVooght House Movers to become a part of the recreated Herr farmstead. Repairs will take place over the next few months.

In the more than 50 years since the granary has been moved to our museum campus, it has lacked a permanent home and purpose. With your help, we can give this historic structure new life and tell its important story for generations to come.
