The Road to Freedom and Emancipation:
Themed Field Trip
Friday, June 20 from 10 am - 2 pm
Explore the history and context around the Juneteenth holiday in the United States. Topics explored will include the history of racial injustice in the U.S., the Civil War and the limitations of the Emancipation Proclamation. Additionally, we encourage groups to explore the modern significance of Juneteenth and its long-term impact.
As part of this experience you will:
Learn about the only African American Civil War unit credited to Wisconsin: Company F, 29th Infantry Unit, United States Colored Troops.
Take part in Emancipation celebrations.
Follow the story of Company “D” 27th Wisconsin, who was there for the liberation of Texas and has ties to our community.
