Heritage Skills Expo

Wisconsin’s settlers filled their lives with simple pleasures and useful skills. Join museum crafters and farmers for a celebration of Wisconsin’s rich folk life traditions! Discover a heritage craft, such as spinning and knitting. Explore heritage farm skills, such as wood-stove cooking and antique machinery. Watch specialty craftsmen such as blacksmiths and broom makers create their wares. Kitchens, barn yards, and workshops across the museum will bustle with activities and fun.

The Heritage Skills Expo is targeted to middle and high school students. As high schoolers get ready to enter the workforce or go to college, it is important to look back at the historical "careers" that paved the way for modern jobs. 

The ideal age for this program is 12 to 17. Register by April 26.

Homeschool program admission is $6 for students age 4 to 17. Children under 4 are admitted free. One adult educator per family is admitted free.  Additional adults may join in the program at a cost of $6 each.

Meet tradespeople in Pinecrest Village and become their apprentice: Mr. Sykora at the shoe shop, Mr. Witt in the blacksmith shop, Mrs. Rank at the Dress Shop, the newspaper reporter, the railroad conductor, and the Burke's, who own the General Store. Learn how they are adapting to new technology and power to expand their businesses.

Pinecrest Power (Homeschool Program)

Learn about moving heavy loads with a fulcrum and lever and pulleys. Work with wood tools like a hand drill and a plane. Make molasses cookies and cheese and see chemistry at work. Watch a blacksmith use molecular changes to shape iron! Learn about changes in communication in the 1800s and construct an electrical circuit to send Morse code. See how STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and history connect through pioneer power in the 19th century.

Register by September 27.

Discover how the Ingalls Family braved Wisconsin winters as you travel through our Pioneer Village following Laura’s story in The Long Winter. Wood stoves will warm our buildings but please dress in your pioneer winter attire.

Homeschool program admission is $6 for students age 5 to 17. Children
under 5 and homeschool teachers are admitted free.

*Bundle up early and save $1 off admission when you register before January 24.
